WHO IS ASSOCIATED
David Abelove, majority shareholder, can trace the origin of his company, Associated Textile Rental Services, Inc., to 1907 in Schenectady, NY. Associated, originally named Abelove's Linen Supply, was founded by David's great uncle, Barney Abelove.
When Barney came up with the idea of creating a linen company, his goals were set on supplying doctor's offices with clean, snow white, medical towels for use on their patients. This vision maintained his total focus as his business gradually grew, with more and more doctors subscribing to the towel service. His business grew more quickly then even he had anticipated, and soon included customers not only in Schenectady, but also throughout eastern and central New York.
All of the towels that he serviced were washed and hand folded in his home and then transported from Schenectady to each city he serviced via the train. Once he arrived by train at the desired city, he would then rent a horse and wagon and make all deliveries to the customers that had subscribed to his service.
"From the very beginning, we've been about making businesses look great. No wonder we do all we
can to hire and keep the best people on staff."
As time went on, Barney began getting inquiries from customers regarding the possibility of renting additional items, such as bed linens and doctors coats. These inquiries proved to be the genesis for a new business strategy for Barney and for Abelove's Linen Supply Co.
By listening to his customers and clearly understanding their needs, Barney began to offer a full range of reusable textile items on a rental basis. With his keen understanding of the business and a sense of urgency that was second to none, Barney's company began to diversify, offering these rental items not only to doctor's offices, but also to many different kinds of businesses. This path gradually gave way to the full service concept that Associated employees today.
This concept has proven to be the foundation of the company's tremendous success in this industry for nearly one full century.
In the mid 1930's, Barney transferred the daily responsibilities of running his business to his son, Martin. Later, as the company continued to grow, Martin solicited the help of his younger cousin, Milton, an aspiring attorney, to help him manage and continue to grow the business. In 1953, Martin purchased Associated Laundry of American, which was located in Syracuse, NY. This business was merged with Abelove's Linen Supply and, likewise, thrived under Martin's leadership.
In 1972, Martin chose to concentrate on the health care industry and developed a very successful heath care rental supply company, which he moved to Scranton, PA. Milton acquired Abelove's Linen Supply from Martin, which then had locations in Utica, Syracuse, and Schenectady. Around the same time, Milton purchased Central Laundry and Supply in Rochester, NY, which gave the company a strong foothold in Rochester, as well as western, NY. Later, the company purchased two other companies in Rochester, which enabled the company to become the primary full service supplier of textile rental items in Western New York. Milton continued to run the company until his son, David, became President in 1973. Today, David Abelove, President and CEO of Associated Textile Rental Services, Inc., is still the majority shareholder of the company. Sr. Vice President, Anthony J. Barbato, and a small core of senior managers, are also shareholders in the company. Associated's corporate headquarters is located in Utica, NY. Additional branch offices are located in Buffalo and Syracuse, NY; while the company's
state-of-the-art production facility is located at the site of the former Central Laundry and Supply Company.
"To stay connected to our community. To treat our customers the way we like to be treated ourselves. And we do it all with a smile."
While today's business world is certainly different from the world Barney Abelove faced in 1907, a few things have truly withstood the test of time. First, the strong commitment and sense of urgency that Barney had to all of his customers continues to permeate Associated Textile today. Our managers have a sense of urgency that is second to none, providing only the finest services and quality to the markets they solicit on a daily basis. As a result, today's Associated has grown to more than 250 employees, serving more than 3,000 customers throughout the entire state of New York.
Secondly, Associated continues to listen to its
customer's needs. Unlike many companies who have policies and procedures that are made of stone, Associated has always maintained a very flexible approach towards its services and policies, making certain that customer satisfaction always comes first. This philosophy has enabled Associated to expand its "full service concept" to cover all market segments that utilize reusable textiles today, including the hospitality, medical, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and high-tech industries.
